Protect Your Business from Phishing Scams

What is a phishing scam?

Phishing attacks are defined as electronic communications from scammers disguised as trusted, reliable sources to steal personal information from users including:

  • Username and Password
  • Social Security, Bank, and Credit Card Information
  • Unique Answers for Commonly Asked Security Questions (i.e. What was your first car?, What is your mother’s maiden name?)

Prepare your employees

Employees are receiving emails every day from people in and outside the organization. Send out a company-wide email with step-by-step instructions for identifying phishing scams. Alternatively, if you’re a smaller business, try hosting a training session on phishing identification.

Identifying a phishing email

Follow this quick checklist for email components that should be checked before clicking any links, downloading any files, or providing any personal information:

  • Inspect the “From:” field. The difference can be as small as versus
  • Question the email’s purpose. If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.
  • If you are unsure, it’s safer to simply not provide the information.
